Statement of Need/Program Overview

Monitoring and evaluating the quality of care through peer review programs is essential to ensuring that high standards of patient care are being met. This educational activity is designed to inform practitioners and other members of the healthcare team, who routinely make clinical decisions, about the importance of having a protected peer review program. Peer review programs must be established in such a way to avoid discoverability during litigation while identifying changes that need to occur to improve patient safety and quality of care.  

Target Audience

The target audience for this activity is Medical Mutual's provider physician groups and related healthcare professionals practicing in non-hospital settings.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Explain the benefits of an established peer review program in non-hospital-based care settings.
  2. Cite 2-3 examples in which statutes can protect peer review information from discoverability during litigation.
  3. Summarize how peer review relates to case law and it's application to developing a peer review program.
  4. Outline steps for establishing a protected peer review program that aligns with state statute(s) for the maximum litigation protection.

Instructions to Receive CME Credit

In order to successfully complete the activity, participants must score 70% on the post test at the end of the activity and complete the course evaluations. Each participant has a maximum of three attempts to score a 70%. Successful completion is supported by a 70% pass rate at the end of the course, proving competency on the content of the activity.
