Statement of Need/Program Overview

Everyone is only one step away from a medical emergency. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is a federal law that requires anyone coming to an emergency department to be stabilized and treated, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. Penalties for EMTALA violations carry hefty fines, termination of Medicare provider agreements, and exposure to lawsuits in civil court.  The purpose of this webinar is for participants to understand the history and scope of EMTALA, comprehend the provisions or obligations under EMTALA and recognize the potential penalties and risk exposure for noncompliance with EMTALA.

Target Audience

The target audience for this activity is Curi's provider physician group and related healthcare professionals.

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Discuss the history and scope of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).
  2. Interpret the meaning of EMTALA verbiage.
  3. Explain the provisions or obligations under EMTALA.
  4. Cite 2 to 3 penalties that could be enforced as a result of noncompliance with EMTALA.

Instructions to Receive CME Credit

In order to successfully complete the activity, participants must score 70% on the post test at the end of the activity and complete the course evaluations. Each participant has a maximum of three attempts to score a 70%. Successful completion is supported by a 70% pass rate at the end of the course, proving competency on the content of the activity.
