Statement of Need/Program Overview

The purpose of this educational activity is to provide an overview of practical, safe controlled substances prescribing practices for acute and chronic pain management. Learners will have the opportunity to identify risk mitigation strategies and risk screening tools, discuss the opioid epidemic along with contributing factors such as common errors in prescribing, and explore the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. Applying the newly acquired information into the learner's daily practice will have a positive and lasting effect on patient care and safety.

Target Audience

The target audience for this activity is Medical Mutual's provider physician group and related healthcare professionals

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Discuss the opioid epidemic, inclusive of the roles the patient, prescriber, and pharmacist have in mitigating the misuse and abuse of controlled substances
  2. Cite 2-3 examples of common controlled substances prescribing errors and omissions and strategies to eliminate such errors
  3. Outline the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain recommendations in prescribing controlled substances for pain management
  4. Consistently utilize risk mitigating strategies and risk screening tools to assist in controlled substances prescribing for chronic pain management

Instructions to Receive CME Credit

In order to successfully complete the activity, participants must score 70% on the post test at the end of the activity and complete the course evaluations. Each participant has a maximum of three attempts to score a 70%. Successful completion is supported by a 70% pass rate at the end of the course, proving competency on the content of the activity.
